Who is High Risk for Colon Cancer

The chance of colon cancer increases with age, especially after the age of 50. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer in the United States. Those who are particularly high risk are:

  • People with a family history of colorectal cancer with close relatives, several generations, especially those whose family member contracted cancer at a young age
  • People with an extensive history of irritable bowel disease
  • Women with a history of breast cancer, ovarian or uterine cancer
  • People who have had pre-cancerous polyps
